Scientific Games Slots Canada

There is a common piece of advice that says to surround oneself with the right people, as they will be able to motivate and push one further on the path to success. While this advice generally applies to individuals, the same could actually be said for companies, and never is this more true than with the story of Scientific Games.

This American developer has undergone a lot of growth and evolution over its decades-long history. Since its uniquely fragmented beginnings, Scientific Games made several key strategic partnerships and acquisitions over time, allowing it to grow its portfolio and influence to eventually become one of the largest providers of hardware and software solutions for both land-based and online casinos in the US, Canada, and other regions.

So how did Scientific Games come to be, and are their online slot games any good? We’ll discuss all of that and share our thoughts on this casino game developer after the jump.

About Scientific Games

The history of Scientific Games as we know it today is a tale of many intertwined strands that spans over several decades and involves multiple companies. Due to the fact that we are concentrating on online slots games, many of these firms are ultimately irrelevant to our evaluation of Scientific Games’ slots. All you need to know about those other firms is that they enable the Scientific Games Corporation to participate in a variety of gambling industries, including sports betting, lotteries, and other forms of entertainment.

The online slots division of Scientific Games is actually housed under a subsidiary firm named SG Gaming, which is itself composed of two iGaming developers from the United Kingdom: The Global Draw and Barcrest. SG Gaming develops the majority of Scientific Games’ portfolio and is regulated by the UK Gambling Commission.

The Global Draw was founded in the 1990s and rose to fame for developing the world’s first centralized gaming network that connected gambling machines to licensed betting shops. They would be acquired by Scientific Games in 2006.

Barcrest, meanwhile, was founded in the late 1960s as a producer of physical slot machines and bingo machines for use in casinos around the United Kingdom. It was only a matter of time until they made the successful move to digital slot games as technology became the new norm, delivering titles such as Rainbow Riches and Thai Flower to widespread critical acclaim. The Barcrest brand was originally bought by IGT in 1998, and it would later come under the Scientific Games group in 2011, after which it was merged with The Global Draw to form SG Gaming.

Over the years, Scientific Games would continue to add to its roster of casino game makers, inducting renowned brands such as WMS and Bally into its ranks in 2013 and 2014, respectively, expanding the corporation’s portfolio even more.

Today, the Scientific Games Corporation is one of the most influential names in the gambling industry, with a presence in online slot games, offline slot machines, sports betting, lotteries, online poker, and live dealer casinos.

Best Scientific Games Slots

Although they don’t have the same level of recognition as Microgaming or IGT, SG online slots boast a pretty dedicated fanbase in the online casino scene in Canada. With developers like Bally and Barcrest under their ownership, Scientific slot games are not to be  ignored by any means. We’ve listed three of the best slot games under the Scientific Games portfolio.

Rainbow Riches

Dropping you into a wonderland of lush green fields and magical mushrooms, Rainbow Riches puts you on a quest for riches in a world of Irish myth, accompanied by a leprechaun who aids you in your travels. This 5-reel, 10-payline slot game is one of Barcrest’s most popular and successful titles, and has since spawned numerous sequels and spinoffs over the years. From Pick n’ Mix to Cluster Magic and Megaways, the Rainbow Riches series of games give players tons of ways to win the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

Mighty Black Knight

Fans of high fantasy will find a lot to like in Mighty Black Knight, a Scientific slots game that places you in the shoes and armor of the titular Black Knight. Your quest here is to find and unlock the vast riches buried deep in the halls of Castle Blackspin, lined with precious jewels and royal artifacts.

Monopoly: Big Event

Monopoly Big Event is a licensed slot game based on the titular property trading board game by Parker Brothers, which is now owned by Hasbro. Unlike most other licensed games that only take graphics and audio from their source material, Monopoly Big Event actually incorporates mechanics from the original board game into the context of online slots, with things like the Chance and Community cards shaking things up in the game every so often.

Does Scientific Games Support Mobile Play?

Yes, some Scientific Games titles are made to support playing on mobile devices—the Monopoly series of slots is the most notable example. However, SG Gaming is not quite as focused on the online casino games market as other developers, choosing instead to focus on their software for physical slot machines.

Does Scientific Games Have Branded Slots?

Yes, Scientific Games has made a few major licensing deals to offer branded machines and games. Arguably the most noteworthy of these deals is a 2017 licensing agreement with MGM that allowed SG to produce games under the James Bond franchise. Through this deal, Scientific Games released an entire line of video slot machines based on various movies of the eponymous spy, but interestingly enough there were no similar games released specifically for online casinos.

A tie-in slot that did find its way into online casinos, however, is Monopoly. Scientific Games inked a brand deal with Hasbro all the way back in 1998 to exclusively develop and release slot machines and online slot games based on the classic property trading board game. This exclusivity deal worked out especially well for Scientific Games as they were able to release over a dozen titles under the Monopoly name.

Marking the 20-year point of this deal, Scientific Games and Hasbro signed an extension of their licensing deal in 2018, giving Scientific Games the exclusive rights to Hasbro-branded games into 2025. SG Gaming also released a new online slot game commemorating this anniversary, this time based on the Cluedo franchise to much fanfare in the online casino community.

Our Final Thoughts

Unlike many of the more popular corporations in the online gaming industry, Scientific Games did not make their breakthrough into the market by developing a standout game that put the online casino community on notice. Instead, Scientific Games slowly built their reputation by finding and acquiring rising talent and guiding them all under a unified direction.

The result is a corporation with an incredibly diverse range of products and services, all offering significant competition in their respective markets. Scientific Games is an excellent example of a company that has surrounded itself with the right people, which has led the entire organization to massive success in the casino world.
