Basketball may not be a national sport in the Canada but that won’t make the Basketball Star slot game any less popular. Like many other American sports, it is rapidly gaining popularity, and more and more people have grown up playing the sport. It is also very popular in Asia and Europe (especially Eastern Europe). Therefore, Microgaming saw an opportunity in the market for a “slam dunk” of Basketball Star. Using their Sports Star
slots
blueprint, they have crafted yet another 3D slot with all the buzz and excitement of attending a live sports venue.

Basketball was invented in the 19th century, having first been played in Springfield, Massachusetts. Since then, the game has advanced wildly. These days it is known specifically for attracting some of the world’s tallest sporting talent. Players regularly tower over 7ft tall. As there are five players per team at any given time during a match, if all ten players stood on each other’s shoulders, then they would reach the height of a 7 storey building – at least. This is roughly the equivalent size of a new apartment complex, the type of which you probably live in if you are a city dweller.
In the USA, the NBA (National Basketball Association) is the most important professional league, paying some of the highest salaries in the world sport. Often, the size of a player’s pay packet can run into the millions.
Michael Jordan. He is a famous basketball player and actor in the legendary Disney movie, Space Jam. You have heard of him.
Basketball Star is a 3×5 reel video slot with an RTP (Return to Player) of between 96-97%. Like its brother and sister slots, there are 243 pay lines. Microgaming pioneered the mass pay line approach to video slots when they created Cashapilla, which was the first to have over 100 pay lines.
Like on Rugby Star, players can win a larger jackpot which is worth up to 120,000 credits.
The Basketball Star symbol is wild and it substitutes for all other symbols except for the scatter. During any one spin, there are more than 40 wild symbols knocking about that can display on the reels. On reels 3, 4 and 5, these can become stacked.
In addition, you have the Wild Shot feature (equivalent to Wild Wickets, Wild Pass and Striking Wild) which can give you 2 Wild Reels on 2,3 or 4. When they randomly turn wild, you are guaranteed a win! However, the Rolling Reels do not appear during the Wild Shot feature.
During the main game, the Rolling Reels feature awards players with a re-spin when they win. If you get another win, then you get another re-spin. And this can continue on for some time, if you’re lucky. During the free spins round, the Rolling Reels also feature to award players with a multiplier.
Basketball Star Free Spins
As is the case with Basketball Star’s sister slots, the free spins round is trigged by getting 3 or more scatter symbols in the main game. The more scatters you get, the more free spins you get.
3 Basketball Scatter Symbols: 15 Free Spins
4 Basketball Scatter Symbols: 20 Free Spins
5 Basketball Scatter Symbols: 25 Free Spins
If the Rolling Reels appear in the Basketball free spins, then you can have you wins multiplied by up to 10x. Unfortunately, you cannot retrigger more free spins in the midst of a free spins game.
The scatter symbols in Basketball Star also pay quite handsomely in the regular game. With four consecutive scatters, you could win $2,500 on a $50 bet. If you get five, then you could see a prize pot of $12,500.
Special Bonus Features
There are no further bonus games on Basketball Star. This is unfortunate – but rules are rules, like double dribbling. They are plenty of thrills and spills to have on this slot. We love the Rolling Reels feature, and the Free Spins round is an excellent way to score big wins.
Basketball Star Free Play
There are plenty of places to enjoy Basketball Star for free before you have to stake real money. Many online casinos like Jackpot City will let you play Microgaming slots for fun, so that you can get a feel for the game. According to regulators codes, slots must have the same RTP in free play mode as they do in real play mode.
The slot has medium variance – this means it pays out regularly, with reasonably sized wins.
Our Basketball Star Review Summary
If you are a fan of sports slots, then there’s no reason why you won’t be a fan of this one and play at Microgaming casino sites. Though Basketball is a more America-centric sport in comparison to the other slots in the series, it is a sport that is really taking off in the UK and in the rest of Europe. Though some of the gameplay may seem familiar, especially if you’ve played the other Sports slots, there’s just enough to differentiate it from the crowd.
Pros
