Slot of the Month – Cat Wilde in the Eclipse of the Sun God

by Dale Shelabarger Updated:

With February almost done, we reckon that now is as good a time as any to put together our second slot of the month feature. In January, we profiled San Quentin from No Limit City. This time out, our attentions turn to Play ‘n Go’s new five-reel slot, Cat Wilde in the Eclipse of the Sun God. So let’s get going by looking at the game’s theme.

Theme

Cat Wilde in the Eclipse of the Sun God (from here on in Cat Wilde Eclipse) is inspired by the Indiana Jones/Tomb Raider franchises and is the third in the series. Once again, the game is fronted up by the eponymous heroine, Cat Wilde (son of Rich) – a kind of sulky, brattish version of Lara Croft who likes visiting exotic locations to rob graves and raid…tombs…

Pilfering priceless artifacts is a source of considerable inspiration among slot game developers - Rich Wilde, Legacy of Dead, and Book of Ra are just some examples of this morbid obsession.

Happily, Cat Wild Eclipse proceeds under the guise of ‘exploration’, much like Gonzo’s Quest. The game area comprises five transparent reels set against a South American jungle complete with Aztec temple. Play is accompanied by a rather dramatic pipe-driven orchestral score that’s a bit ‘overblown’ for an online slot game truth-be-told. Nevertheless, the game looks and sounds great.

Reel Symbols/How to Play

Low-value symbols are signified by stone-effect playing card lettering and numbers. Joining these painfully derivative symbols is a compass, key and skull as well as Cat Wilde herself. Land five of these across a pay-line and you’ll win 6, 12.5, 5, and 37.5 times your stake respectively.

The wild is represented by a sun god – typically it substitutes for all other reel symbols and pays out 50 times your stake should it appear five times.

Cascading Reels

Central to the base game is a cascading reels mechanic – as ever winning symbols fall off the reels to be replaced with new ones - the process continues until it’s no longer possible to form winning combinations. Each winning cascade includes a multiplier that increases in increments of x1, x2, x6 and x10 – these are signified by a meter that sits above the reels and apply to the first four cascades.

Bonus Features – Free Spins Round

A moon Goddess serves as the scatter and unlocks the free spins round, provided she lands on reels one, three, and five on the same spin. You’ll then be rewarded with 10 free spins while both the cascading reels feature and win multipliers remain in play.

During the free spins round, the scatters also behave like wilds. Collect at least five of them and an extra five spins are awarded along with upgraded multiplier values. Should you manage to collect 30, it’s possible to play with multipliers of up to x70. Here’s how it works:

Conclusion

OK, so there’s no getting away from the fact that Cat Wilde in the Eclipse of the Sun God bears a startling resemblance to Gonzo’s Quest, both in terms of theme and game-play. However, the multiplier values are higher in the base game as well as the multi-level free spins round. And this is where the big wins are to be had thanks to the potential x70 multiplier and re-triggers. In conclusion, then, Cat Wilde Eclipse has plenty going for it including a decent RTP of 96.22%. If only Play ‘n Go’ hadn’t capped the max win at 5500.
