Top 5 Megaways Slot Games

by Dale Shelabarger Updated:

We often make mention of Megaways slots here at Inside Casino. In fairness, it’s pretty difficult to avoid doing so given how popular these games have become with players. Since Big Time Gaming unveiled their revolutionary mechanic in 2015, 177 Megaways slots have been released with another 24 set to be unveiled this year. Although production levels have slowed in comparison to previous years, numerous developers are set to continue cashing in on BGT’s main cash cow. In view of this, we’ve decided to put together a list of five top-ranked Megaways slots that currently feature prominently in online casino lobbies.

Bonanza Megaways – BGT

Bonanza Megaways was unleashed in 2016 and is the most widely played Megaways slot by a country mile. The game, which remains a staple in game lobbies, comprises the usual shape-shifting game engine and 117,649 potential winning combinations. As well as a superbly conceived gold-rush theme that still manages to hold its own, the game is graced with three bonus features. These include a cascading reels variant known as ‘reactions’, in which winning symbols are blasted away to be replaced with new ones. There’s also a fairly decent free spins bonus round and an unlimited win multiplier that can prove very rewarding.

Fishin’ Frenzy Megaways – Blueprint

After securing a licensing deal with BGT, Blueprint Gaming released Fishin’ Frenzy Megaways – a six reel adaptation of its classic bricks and mortar slot game. While the game has less pay-lines than other Megaways variants (‘only’ 15,625) and an underwhelming RTP of 95.02%, it does include a standout free spins round that can award up to 50 spins. During the round, you’ll get the chance to win up to 50 times your stake thanks to the inclusion of cash values for each symbol. OK, so FFM isn’t that sophisticated in terms of core game-play. But like seagulls following a fishing-trawler (see Cantona) players continue flocking to this game in the hope of a sardine…sorry, pay-out. It’s also pretty popular with operators right now and can be found in hundreds of lobbies.

Piggy Riches Megaways – Netent/Red Tiger

NetEnt was also smart enough to jump on the BGT bandwagon, although they had to purchase Red Tiger for the privilege. Nonetheless, Piggy Riches Megaways was their first foray into the world of six-reel games. Released over a decade ago with Red Tiger, this old-school interpretation boasts a full quota of pay-lines (117,649) and a max win potential of 36,000x your stake with each spin. There are a few shortcomings worth bearing in mind though, namely a dismaying RTP of 94.72% and a solitary (free spins) bonus feature. Nonetheless, Piggy Riches has achieved iconic status among players thanks to an engaging, potentially very rewarding base game, complete with a trebling multiplier. We should also point out that the free spins game does include an unlimited progressive multiplier as well.

Gonzo’s Quest Megaways – Netent/Red Tiger

This one was released in the summer of 2020 and is the highly-anticipated sequel to NetEnt’s classic five-reeler. As far as appearances go, Gonzo's Quest Megaways remains true to the original, albeit with enhanced visuals and animations. And as with most slots from the Swedish developers, it’s packed with special extras such as an avalanche feature, an avalanche multiplier, a sticky ‘unbreakable wilds’ mechanic and an earthquake feature where all low value symbols are destroyed. On top of this is a Free Fall round that can dole out multipliers of up to x15. Although GQM is a relatively new addition to the Megaways series, the game is enjoying massive exposure at the minute and rightly so.

Fruit Shop Megaways - NetEnt

Fruit Shop Megaways is a NetEnt slot game managed to develop all by themselves, without any input from Red Tiger. We’re teasing of course – Net Entertainment can’t really put a foot wrong in our book given their deserved reputation as one of the industry’s leading innovators. Despite their programming prowess, the Swedes have also built up a sizeable portfolio of fairly basic slots over the years and Fruit Shop is one of the most obvious examples. In keeping with the playful simplicity of the original, the Megaways sequel is devoid of cascading reels and includes just one bonus feature: a free spins round with a potential x10 multiplier. Thanks to an RTP of 96.06% and more than 117,000 pay-lines though, this particular Megaways overhaul is proving a big hit right now.
